Multilateral agreements on climate change are key, Chancellor Merkel stressed in talks with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives. In Merkel’s view, industrialised nations must take on a pioneering role.
"I am pleased to see a broad-based, indeed cross-party movement in Congress attaching great importance to climate and energy issues,” said the Chancellor.

Multilateral agreements are needed if we are to meet the challenges of climate change at global level, said Merkel. "We believe the industrialised nations must take on a pioneering role in this regard,” she continued. The key to this role, she said, is technological development and innovation.

Importance of new technologies

Pelosi likewise underscored the importance of new technologies for the fight against global warming. At the same time she called for due consideration to be given to "market needs”.

Pelosi hailed Germany’s leadership in fighting climate change and emphasised her agreement with the Chancellor that "solutions must be multilateral”.
