EITI is the abbreviation for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. The initiative was announced in 2002 at the Johannesburg Summit on Sustainable Development.
The EITI aims to ensure that national revenues from extractive industries are made more transparent by means of accountability. This is intended to prevent corruption and foster economic growth in the supporting countries, particularly the Third World. It is supported by the IMF and the World Bank.
